Restylane and Juvederm lips: what’s the difference?

Restylane and Juvederm are dermal fillers containing hyaluronic acid used to treat signs of skin aging. Hyaluronic acid has a “volumizing” effect, which is useful for wrinkles and lip plumping.
Although the two fillers have the same basic ingredients, there are differences in usage, cost, and potential side effects.
Read on to learn more about how these fillers compare so that you can make the most informed decision with your doctor.
Restylane and Juvederm are non-surgical (non-invasive) procedures. Both are dermal fillers containing hyaluronic acid, which can plump the skin. They also contain lidocaine to relieve pain during surgery.
Each brand has a different formula, specifically designed for lips approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Restylane Silk is a formula for the lip area. According to their official website, Restylane Silk is the first lip filler approved by the FDA. It promises “softer, smoother and more natural lips”. Restylane Silk can be used to plump and smooth lips.
Bruising and swelling are common reactions to filler injections and may last for two to three days. How long these symptoms last depends on where you get the injection.
If you are treating lip wrinkles, expect these side effects to disappear within 7 days. If you have plump lips, the side effects can last up to 14 days.
The Restylane and Juvederm injection procedures each take only a few minutes. In the future, you may need follow-up treatments to keep your lips plump.
It is estimated that each injection of Restylane takes between 15 and 60 minutes. Since the lip area is much smaller compared to other injection areas, the duration may fall on the shorter side of this ratio. The effect will show up in a few days.
Generally speaking, Juvederm lip injection requires the same time per operation as Restylane. However, unlike Restylane, Juvederm’s lip effects are immediate.
Due to the plumping effect of hyaluronic acid, both Restylane and Juvederm are said to produce a smoothing effect. However, Juvederm tends to last longer in general, and the result is slightly faster.
After the injection of Restylane Silk, you may see results a few days after the operation. It is said that these fillers will begin to wear out after 10 months.
Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Volbella almost immediately begin to bring changes to your lips. It is said that the results lasted about a year.
Although Restylane and Juvederm lip care are approved by the FDA, this does not mean that these procedures are suitable for everyone. Individual risk factors vary between the two treatments.
According to experience, due to unknown safety hazards, dermal fillers are generally forbidden to be used by pregnant women. Your provider can tell you more about your personal risk factors during your consultation.
Restylane is only suitable for adults 21 years and older. If you have the following medical history, this lip care may not be suitable for you:
Juvederm is also only suitable for adults over 21 years old. If you are allergic or sensitive to lidocaine or hyaluronic acid, your provider may not recommend lip injections.
Lip treatment with Restylane or Juvederm is considered cosmetic surgery, so these injections are not covered by insurance. Nonetheless, these options are cheaper than surgery. They also don’t need any downtime.
You need to consult your provider for specific treatment costs. The American Association of Plastic Surgeons estimates that the general average cost of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers is US$682 per treatment. However, your exact cost depends on how many injections you need, your provider and the area where you live.
Restylane Silk costs between US$300 and US$650 per injection. It all depends on the field of treatment. A West Coast estimate priced Restylane Silk at US$650 per 1 ml injection. Another supplier in New York priced Restylane Silk at $550 per syringe.

The average cost of Juvederm lip care is slightly higher than Restylane. An East Coast supplier priced Juvederm’s Smile Line (Volbella XC) at US$549 per syringe. Another California-based supplier priced Juvederm at between $600 and $900 per injection.
Keep in mind that Juvederm’s effect usually lasts longer than Restylane. This means that you may not need frequent lip care, which will affect your total cost.
Although both Restylane and Juvederm are non-invasive, this does not mean that they are completely risk-free. Side effects, especially mild side effects, are possible.
It is also important to use the correct lip formula to avoid potential irritation and scarring. Please keep in mind that Juvederm Ultra XC and Volbella XC are formula types for lips. Restylane Silk is also the product version of Restylane for lips.
Like Restylane, Juvederm is also at risk of side effects such as swelling and redness. Some people also feel pain and numbness. Volbella XC formula can sometimes cause dry skin.
For any product, avoid strenuous activity, alcohol, and exposure to the sun or tanning bed for at least 24 hours after the lip injection to help prevent side effects.
The manufacturer of Restylane recommends that people avoid extreme cold weather after treatment until any redness or swelling disappears.
The minor side effects of the lip treatment will disappear within one to two weeks, but it depends on where you get the injection. If you are treating lip wrinkles, expect these side effects to disappear within 7 days. If you have plump lips, the side effects can last up to 14 days.
Some dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and beauticians may be trained and certified in dermal lip fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm.
If you already have a dermatologist, this may be the first professional you contact. They may refer you to other providers at this time. Based on experience, the provider you choose must be board-certified and experienced in these lip surgeries.
