Teenagers use hyaluronic acid pen to self-inject hyaluronic acid on social media

After videos of children self-injecting hyaluronic acid into the lips and skin using a hyaluronic acid pen appeared on social media, the American Association of Dermatology Surgeons (ASDSA) issued a safety patient alert outlining its dangers.
“The American Association of Dermatological Surgery (ASDSA) wishes to remind the public to pay attention to the purchase and use of’hyaluronic acid pens’ to inject hyaluronic acid fillers into the epidermis and upper dermis of the skin,” the press release reads. “ASDSA members are dermatologists certified by the committee. They found problematic social media videos in which children used these pens to inject themselves and advertise their use to their peers.”
The ASDSA document explains that the hyaluronic acid pen was originally developed for insulin delivery and used air pressure technology to deliver hyaluronic acid into the skin, temporarily “filling” it with nano-scale acid molecules. In addition, since the administrator does not need to be a medical professional, hyaluronic acid pens are common in settings such as salons and medical centers.
As reported by the Dermatology Times, the marketing materials of these pens claim that these devices can create volume and shape while lifting lips, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, 11 lines, and forehead wrinkles.
“Adolescents illegally using an injection pen to inject non-sterile hyaluronic acid may have serious reactions, including infection and tissue necrosis,” said orthopedic surgeon Mark Jewell, MD Eugene. As with any type of cosmetic surgery, doctors certified by the advisory board will help avoid any risk of adverse events. “Facial injections require in-depth knowledge of anatomy and expertise, and if they are delivered to untrained consumers, they may cause serious harm,” added Mathew Avram, MD, President of ASDSA.
According to the news released, ASDSA is in contact with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on its safety issues and hopes to work together to put medical equipment in the hands of trained and appropriately educated medical professionals. Please continue to follow NewBeauty for updates.
